Well Pump Running But No Water: Dry Well or Failed Pump?

Quick Summary

A well pump running but no water coming out is a different fault from a pump that will not start at all. There are five realistic causes, and only one of them is a dry well. The other four are mechanical: a broken drop pipe, a failed check valve, a blocked intake, or worn impellers.

One thing decides which: did the taps spit air before they went dry? Air means the water level dropped. Silence means something between the pump and the tap has failed. Either way, switch the pump off. A submersible pump is cooled by the water moving past it, and running one dry will finish it in under an hour.

It is a strange thing to stand in a utility room and hear the pump working perfectly while nothing comes out of the kitchen tap. When a pump is dead it is at least obvious what has happened. When it runs and runs and delivers nothing, most people assume the worst and start pricing replacements.

Usually that is the wrong conclusion. A well pump running but no water at the taps is more often a broken pipe, a stuck valve or a well that has been drawn down than a pump that has failed. Late summer makes it more common still, because that is when static water levels across the Upstate sit at their lowest point of the year.

Here is how to work out which one you are dealing with, and what to do in the meantime.

First: did the taps spit air, or just stop?

Before anything else, think back to the last few minutes of water you had. This one detail splits the problem in half.

  • The taps sputtered, spat air, coughed, then went dry — the pump was pulling air along with water. That means the water level in the well fell to the pump intake. The well is the problem, not the pump.
  • Pressure faded steadily and then stopped, no air — the pump is turning but not moving water up the pipe. Mechanical fault.
  • Water was fine, then instantly nothing — often a broken pipe or a valve that has let go.
  • Water went sandy or cloudy first — the pump was scraping the bottom of the well. Treat it as a level problem and switch off, because sand destroys impellers fast.

If you cannot remember, run a tap for a few seconds with the pump on and listen. Spluttering and hissing is air. A weak steady dribble is not.

Switch the pump off now. Whatever the cause, a pump that is running without moving water is destroying itself. Submersible motors are cooled entirely by the water flowing past them. Damage starts within about thirty minutes and a burnt-out motor inside an hour is normal. Turn it off at the breaker, then work out the cause. The pump you save is almost certainly still good.

1. The well has been drawn down, or has run dry

A well is not a tank. It is a hole that intersects groundwater, and it refills at whatever rate the surrounding rock allows. If you draw water out faster than the rock lets it in — a long irrigation session, filling a pool, a houseful of guests — the level drops to the intake and the pump starts pulling air.

That is drawdown, and it recovers. A genuinely dry well, where the water table has fallen below the pump or below the casing, does not recover until the aquifer does.

The recovery test tells you which. Switch the pump off and leave it for two to three hours. Then turn it back on and open one tap only. If you get good water for a few minutes and then air again, the well is refilling slowly and you have a supply problem rather than a pump problem. If you get nothing at all after resting it, look at the mechanical causes below.

2. A broken drop pipe

The drop pipe is the pipe that carries water from the submersible pump up to the well head — sometimes two hundred feet of it. Older galvanised pipe corrodes at the threads. Poly pipe fails at the fittings.

When it splits, the pump keeps working perfectly and simply pumps water back down the well. Nothing reaches the house. It is one of the most common causes of a pump that runs with no delivery, and it is a repair rather than a replacement, although the pump does have to come out of the ground to do it.

3. A failed check valve

The check valve holds water in the drop pipe when the pump stops. If it fails, water drains back into the well every time the pump shuts off, and the pump has to refill the whole pipe before anything reaches you.

Early on this shows up as a delay before water arrives, or pressure that fades between uses. Left alone it turns into no water at all, and in the meantime it causes constant restarting — which is the same wear pattern described in why your well pump keeps turning on and off, and the main reason pumps do not reach the lifespan they should.

4. A blocked intake screen or foot valve

Every pump draws through a screen. In wells with sediment, iron bacteria or fine sand, that screen slowly blinds over. The motor runs, the impellers turn, and very little gets through.

On a shallow or jet-pump system, the same thing happens at the foot valve in the well. Symptoms look identical to a dying pump, which is why so many perfectly good pumps get replaced unnecessarily.

5. Worn impellers, or a jet pump that has lost prime

Impellers are the plastic or brass discs that actually move the water. Sand wears them down over years until the pump spins freely and shifts almost nothing. The motor sounds completely normal, which is what makes it confusing. This one usually does mean replacement.

If you have a jet pump — a pump sitting above ground rather than down the well — the far more likely answer is lost prime. The suction line has drawn in air, usually through a small leak or after the well level dropped, and the pump can no longer lift water. Re-priming fixes it, but if it loses prime again within a day or two there is a leak to find.

What this looks like in Upstate South Carolina

By late August, static water levels across the Upstate are at their annual low. Wells that behaved perfectly all spring start spitting air in the evening after a day of irrigation, then recover by morning. That is drawdown, and it is normal.

Depth changes the picture depending on where you are. Wells drilled into the harder rock of the northern foothills around Travelers Rest and Easley tend to be deeper and rely on fractures in the rock, which means they can yield slowly even when they are far from dry. Wells on the subdivision lots around Simpsonville and Fountain Inn are often shallower and respond faster to a dry spell — but also recover faster once it rains. If your well spits air every August and is fine the rest of the year, that is a well being worked to its limit rather than a well that is failing.

What you can safely check yourself

  • Pressure gauge. Zero with the pump running means nothing is being delivered. Write the number down.
  • Whole house or one tap? If one fixture is dry and the rest are fine, this is not a well problem at all — see what to check before you call.
  • Recovery test. Off for two to three hours, then one tap. Free, and it answers the main question.
  • Recent heavy use. Irrigation, a filled pool, extra people in the house — all of it points at drawdown.
  • Water clarity. Sandy or cloudy water before it stopped is a strong signal about the level.

What you should not do is open the well cap. There is nothing serviceable there for a homeowner, the casing is a contamination route once it is open, and on most systems the wiring at the head is live.

What to remember

1 Turn the pump off first. Running dry destroys a good pump in under an hour. Nothing else matters until it is off.
2 Air in the taps means the well level dropped. No air, just fading pressure, means a mechanical fault above or below ground.
3 Rest it for three hours, then test. Water that returns and fails again is drawdown, not a broken pump.
4 A broken drop pipe looks exactly like a dead pump. So does a blocked intake and a failed check valve. All three cost far less to fix.
5 Do not accept a replacement quote without a test. Static level, pumping level and amp draw separate a dry well from a failed pump in minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my well has run dry or the pump has failed?

Sputtering taps and air in the lines usually mean the water level has dropped to the pump intake. A dead silent tap with a pump you can hear running usually means a mechanical fault such as a broken drop pipe, a blocked intake or worn impellers. Why is my water sputtering and spitting air?

Air in the lines means the pump is drawing air as well as water. On a submersible that points to a water level at or near the intake. On a jet pump it usually means the system has lost its prime or is drawing air through a leak on the suction side.

Is sandy or cloudy water a sign of a dry well?

Often, yes. As the level drops the pump starts pulling from the bottom of the well where sediment sits. Sand is abrasive and wears impellers quickly, so it is a reason to switch off rather than carry on. It can also point to a failed well screen or a casing problem.

Can I just lower the pump deeper into the well?

Sometimes, if there is water below the current setting and enough casing to work with. It is a real option in a drought year, but it requires pulling the pump and knowing the static and pumping levels first. It is not a fix for a well that has no water left in it.

Does no water always mean I need a new pump?
