How Long Does a Well Pump Last?

Quick summary

In practice most pumps fail years early, and almost always for the same reason: the number of times the motor starts, not the number of hours it runs. Fix what is causing the extra starts and you get the years back.

It is one of the most searched questions about well systems, and the honest answer has two halves. There is the service life a manufacturer quotes, and there is what actually happens on a real property in the Upstate.

The gap between those two numbers is where all the useful information sits.

The expected service life

Submersible pump 8 to 15 years. Sits below the water line, which keeps it cool and is the main reason it outlasts the alternative.
Jet pump Around 10 years. Surface mounted, so it runs hotter — but far cheaper and quicker to reach when it does fail.
Pressure tank 8 to 12 years, and often less here. This one matters more than people realise — see below.
Pressure switch 5 to 10 years. The contacts open and close on every single pump cycle, so it wears in proportion to how often the pump starts.

Notice that every figure above is a range, not a number. That is deliberate. The same pump fitted on two properties a mile apart can last twice as long on one of them.

What actually ends a pump’s life

Here is the part that surprises people: a well pump is not worn out by running. It is worn out by starting.

An electric motor draws a large surge of current the instant it starts — several times what it uses once it is turning. That surge produces heat in the windings. A pump that starts eight or ten times a day handles it comfortably for well over a decade. A pump starting two hundred times a day is absorbing that heat repeatedly, with no time to cool between cycles.

So the real question is not “how many hours has it run”, it is “how many times has it started”. And that number is controlled almost entirely by one component.

The pressure tank decides how long your pump lasts. A healthy tank holds a reserve under pressure so the pump can rest between draws. A waterlogged tank holds nothing, so the pump restarts every time anyone opens a tap. That single fault is the most common reason a pump dies at year four instead of year twelve.

Why Upstate pumps often fall short of the figures

Manufacturer service-life figures assume clean water, correct sizing and a stable water table. Piedmont wells frequently offer none of those, which is why the pumps we replace here tend to be younger than the brochure suggests.

  • Iron and fine sediment. Common in Upstate groundwater. Both wear pressure tank bladders faster, and a tank that fails early takes the pump with it.
  • Fractured-rock recovery rates. Piedmont wells refill through cracks in the bedrock rather than from a sandy aquifer. Heavy simultaneous demand can outrun the well even when it is perfectly healthy, which means more cycling.
  • Seasonal drawdown. After a dry spring the water level drops toward the pump intake. A pump that runs on air, even briefly, loses years. Properties on higher ground like the foothills around Travelers Rest see this first.
  • Systems outgrown by the house. A well drilled for a two-bathroom farmhouse now serving four bathrooms and irrigation cycles far harder than it was ever specified for. Extremely common around Simpsonville and Greer.
  • Working wells. Where a single well feeds the house, a barn and livestock, the running hours are several times a domestic system. Standard around Fountain Inn.

None of that means a well here is a liability. It means the maintenance that protects the pump matters more than average.

Signs your pump is near the end

Pumps rarely stop without warning. These are the signals that usually come first, in roughly the order they appear:

  1. Pressure fluctuating during a shower — often the tank rather than the pump, but it is what starts the damage
  2. The pump audibly starting more often than it used to, for the same water use
  3. Longer run times to reach the same cut-out pressure
  4. Higher electricity bills with no change in usage — those start-up surges add up
  5. Air spitting from the taps or occasional sandy water
  6. The breaker tripping now and then, then more often
  7. A hum with no water, or a click with no response

The first four are the ones worth acting on, because at that stage the fix is usually a tank or a switch. By the time you reach the last two, the choice has often already been made for you.

What extends a pump’s life

Almost all of it comes down to reducing the number of starts.

  • Keep the pressure tank charged correctly. The air charge should sit two PSI below the pump’s cut-in setting. This is the single highest-value thing on the list. See pressure tank service.
  • Size the tank to the household, not the original house. A larger tank means fewer, longer pump cycles rather than constant short ones.
  • Replace a worn pressure switch promptly. It is the cheapest part on the system and a failing one causes erratic cycling. See pressure switch repair.
  • Stagger heavy demand. Running irrigation at the same time as the morning showers is what exposes an undersized system.
  • Never let it run dry. If you get air from the taps, switch the pump off rather than waiting to see whether it clears.
  • Have the system tested annually once it passes about seven years. It is a short visit and it catches the tank fault before it costs you the pump.

Repair or replace an ageing pump?

There is no age at which a working pump should be replaced on principle. Condition decides it, not the calendar. But the maths shifts as a system ages:

  • Under eight years — almost always repair. At this age a failure is usually a component rather than the pump itself.
  • Eight to twelve years — repair if the fault is above the well cap. If the pump has to come out anyway, replacing it while it is up is often the cheaper decision overall.
  • Past twelve years — a significant failure usually means replacement, sized properly to the well and the household. See well pump replacement.

What should never happen is a replacement quoted on the pump’s age alone, without testing the switch, the tank and the wiring first.
