Bad Capacitor or Control Box? Symptoms of a Three-Wire Well Pump Fault
Of all the ways a well system can mislead people, this one is the most expensive. A failed start capacitor is a small component in a box you can reach without tools. A failed pump is a long, heavy pull out of the ground. From inside the house, the two are indistinguishable.
First: do you have a control box at all?
Submersible pumps come in two types, and only one of them uses a control box.
| Three-wire pump | Three insulated conductors plus a ground run down the well. Starting components live in a separate control box above ground, usually a grey metal box mounted near the pressure tank or switch. |
| Two-wire pump | Two conductors plus a ground. The starting components are built into the motor itself, down the well. No control box. |
| Jet pump | No control box, but the motor usually has its own capacitor under a cover on the motor housing. The same symptoms apply. |
If there is a box labelled with a pump manufacturer’s name and a horsepower rating on the wall near your tank, you have a three-wire system and this article applies directly. Not sure which pump you have? See jet pump vs submersible.
What is inside the box
- Start capacitor. Gives the motor the extra push it needs to begin turning. The most common single failure in the box.
- Start relay. Switches the start capacitor out of the circuit once the motor is up to speed. If it sticks, the capacitor stays in circuit and burns out.
- Run capacitor (on some boxes). Improves efficiency while running.
- Overload protection (on some boxes). Cuts power if the motor draws too much current.
Symptoms of a control box fault
| Humming, no start | Power is reaching the motor but it cannot begin to turn. The classic failed start capacitor. |
| Breaker trips at startup | A motor stalled without its starting help draws very high current. Can also be a shorted component in the box. |
| Starts, then cuts out | A relay not releasing, or overload protection tripping. Often repeats every few minutes. |
| Buzzing or clicking at the box | A relay chattering. Worth noting exactly when it happens. |
| Burnt smell or scorching | Turn the power off and leave it off. A capacitor that has overheated can split or leak. |
Do not open the control box yourself. It carries 240 volts, and capacitors can hold a dangerous charge even after the breaker is off. A bulging, split or leaking capacitor is visible from the outside of some boxes — if you see one, that is all you need to report.
What causes control boxes to fail
Lightning and power surges
Upstate South Carolina gets frequent summer thunderstorms, and control boxes are one of the first things a nearby strike takes out. If the pump stopped during or just after a storm, the box is a strong suspect. We cover this properly in lightning damage to well pumps.
Short cycling
Every start stresses the capacitor and relay. A pump starting hundreds of times a day because of a waterlogged tank wears the starting components out far faster. Replacing the capacitor without fixing the tank means replacing it again.
Heat and age
A box mounted in a hot well house or in direct sun runs its components warmer and shortens their life. Capacitors age regardless, and ten-plus years is a respectable run.
The wrong box
A control box has to match the motor’s manufacturer, horsepower and voltage. A mismatched box — sometimes fitted after a previous repair — can start the motor badly and fail early.
How a proper diagnosis separates box from pump
With meter readings taken at the control box, a technician can check the capacitor and relay directly, then measure the resistance of the motor windings and the insulation of the cable running down the well — all without pulling anything.
- Box components test bad, windings test good: replace the box parts. Pump stays in the well.
- Box tests good, windings or insulation test bad: the fault is down the well, in the cable or the motor.
- Both show damage: common after lightning. Replace the box before deciding anything about the pump, and test again.
That sequence is the reason we never quote a pump replacement for a three-wire system on symptoms alone. It is also covered from the price side in what well pump repair costs.

What to remember
| 1 | Look for the box. If there is one on the wall, the starting parts are above ground. |
| 2 | Humming means starting trouble. The capacitor is the first suspect, not the pump. |
| 3 | After a storm, suspect the box. Lightning takes out control boxes first. |
| 4 | Never open it yourself. Capacitors hold charge after the power is off. |
| 5 | Fix the cause too. A short-cycling tank will kill the new capacitor as well. |
Frequently asked questions
What are the symptoms of a bad well pump control box?
A pump that hums but will not start, a breaker that trips as the pump tries to start, a pump that starts and then cuts out, buzzing or clicking from the box, or a burnt smell. These faults are above ground on a three-wire system, even though they look like a failed pump.
How do I know if my well pump capacitor is bad?
The most common sign is a motor that hums without turning. A capacitor that has visibly bulged, split or leaked has failed. Confirming it requires a meter test, which should only be done by someone trained to work on live and stored-charge components.
Do all well pumps have a control box?
No. Three-wire submersible pumps use a separate control box above ground. Two-wire submersibles have the starting components inside the motor, and jet pumps usually have a capacitor mounted on the motor itself.
Can lightning damage a well pump control box?
Yes, and it is one of the most common causes of control box failure in areas with frequent thunderstorms. A nearby strike can damage the box without damaging the pump, so the box should always be tested first.
Can a bad control box damage the pump?
It can. A relay that sticks, or a box that does not match the motor, can make the motor start poorly or overheat. Repeated attempts to start a motor with a failed capacitor also stress it.
Can I replace a control box with any brand?
No. The control box must match the motor’s manufacturer, horsepower and voltage. A mismatched box can fail early or damage the motor.
How long does a well pump control box last?
Often ten years or more, though surges, heat and frequent starting from short cycling can shorten that considerably.

Check the box before anyone touches the well
We test the control box, the motor windings and the cable insulation from the surface, and tell you whether the fault is in a box on the wall or down the well — with a fixed price in writing before any work starts.
Open 7am–9pm, seven days · No call-out fee with a repair · Fixed price agreed in writing
See our pressure switch and control box repair page. If the breaker is involved, read why a well pump breaker keeps tripping as well.
