Well Pump Replacement Cost: What You Are Actually Paying For
Once a pump genuinely has to be replaced, the conversation changes. The question is no longer whether the fault is cheap or expensive — that was settled at diagnosis. It becomes whether the replacement is done once, properly, or done in a way that brings you back to the same well in three years.
If you have not yet confirmed that the pump itself has failed, start with what well pump repair costs instead. Most no-water calls are not the pump, and a replacement quote for a failed pressure switch is the most expensive mistake available to a well owner.
What a replacement quote is made of
Every honest replacement quote breaks down into the same handful of parts. If yours is a single number, ask for it broken out like this.
| The pump and motor | Sized by horsepower, flow rate and depth. Brand and build quality vary more than most people expect, and so does the warranty behind them. |
| The pull and the set | Lifting the old pump, pipe and wire out, then lowering the new assembly back in. On a submersible this is usually the largest single line, and it scales with depth. |
| Drop pipe | The pipe the water travels up. Old galvanised steel is often corroded through; old poly pipe can be brittle at the fittings. |
| Submersible wire and splice | Insulation cracks with age. A new pump on an old, nicked cable is a new pump with an old fault waiting for it. |
| Check valves and pitless adapter | Small parts with an outsized effect. A leaking check valve is one of the classic reasons a pump short cycles or loses prime. |
| Surface controls | Pressure switch, and a control box on three-wire pumps. Matched to the new motor, not reused because they “still work”. |
| Pressure tank check | Not always a replacement, but always a test. A waterlogged tank is often what killed the old pump, and it will kill the new one the same way. |
Why depth moves the price more than anything else
A pump at 120 feet and a pump at 400 feet can be the same model. The jobs are not remotely the same.
On a deep well the assembly coming out of the casing is long and heavy — pipe, wire, safety rope and a water-filled column all at once. It needs a pump hoist or a truck-mounted rig rather than two people and a pair of gloves, and it takes longer in both directions. More pipe and more wire also means more material if either needs replacing.
That is why well depth matters so much across our area. Wells in the foothills around Travelers Rest and parts of Anderson County are frequently drilled far deeper than wells on newer subdivision lots nearer Simpsonville. Same problem, different job.
Do not know your well depth? Check the well tag on the casing, your closing paperwork, or the original drilling log. If none of those exist, the depth is measured when the pump comes out — and it is worth writing down for next time.
Jet pump or submersible: two different price conversations
A jet pump lives above ground, usually in a well house, basement or crawlspace. Replacing one involves no pull at all, so the cost is mostly the pump and the plumbing connections around it.
A submersible sits down in the well, and nearly every replacement involves the pull described above. If you are not sure which you have, this comparison will tell you in about a minute.
One situation deserves a mention. Some older homes have a jet pump on a well that has since dropped below what a jet pump can reliably lift. Replacing like-for-like there buys another struggling pump. The right answer may be a switch to a submersible, which changes the quote but ends the problem.
What to replace while the pump is out
This is where two quotes most often differ, and where the cheaper one is most often the more expensive decision.
The pull is the expensive part of the job. Pipe, wire and check valves are comparatively cheap. If any of them are near the end of their life, replacing them while the assembly is already on the ground costs a fraction of pulling the pump a second time to deal with them later.
- Replace almost always: the check valve at the pump, the wire splice, and the pressure switch.
- Replace if aged or damaged: drop pipe, submersible cable, torque arrestor, safety rope, the pitless adapter O-rings.
- Test, then decide: the pressure tank and the control box.
A good installer shows you the old parts as they come up. Corroded pipe and cracked insulation are obvious once they are in daylight, and seeing them is the easiest way to know whether a recommendation is genuine.
Sizing: the part nobody quotes for
A replacement pump should be sized to the well and the house, not to whatever is on the truck or whatever was there before. The original pump may have been undersized from day one, or the household may have grown, added irrigation, or added a bathroom since.
Sizing takes into account well yield, static water level, how high the water has to be lifted to the tank, and the flow the house actually needs at peak. An oversized pump in a low-yield well is not an upgrade — it pulls the well down faster and can run itself dry. We cover this properly in what size well pump you need.
How to compare two replacement quotes
| Same pump size? | Horsepower and gallons per minute should match — or the difference should be explained. |
| Pipe and wire included? | Or listed as “if needed”? That phrase is where a low quote becomes a high invoice. |
| Controls matched? | New pressure switch, and the correct control box for a three-wire motor. |
| Tank tested? | If nobody checked the air charge, the likely cause of the old pump’s death has been ignored. |
| Warranty in writing? | Both the manufacturer’s warranty on the pump and the installer’s warranty on the labour. They are separate things. |

What to remember
| 1 | Confirm the pump failed first. Replacing a pump that was fine is the most expensive well mistake there is. |
| 2 | Depth drives the labour. The pull, not the pump, is usually the biggest line on a submersible quote. |
| 3 | Replace the cheap parts while it is up. Check valve, splice and switch cost little now and a second pull later. |
| 4 | Test the tank. Whatever killed the old pump will kill the new one if it is still there. |
| 5 | Compare line by line. “If needed” on a quote is where the price moves. |
Frequently asked questions
What does well pump replacement cost include?
The pump and motor, pulling the old assembly and setting the new one, and usually the check valve, wire splice and pressure switch. Depending on condition it may also include new drop pipe, new submersible cable and a pressure tank. Ask for each item listed separately.
Why is replacing a submersible pump more expensive than a jet pump?
A submersible sits down in the well, so replacing it means pulling the pump, pipe and wire out of the casing, often with lifting equipment. A jet pump sits above ground and involves no pull at all.
Does well depth affect replacement cost?
Significantly. Deeper wells mean a longer, heavier pull, more time on site, and more pipe and wire if either has to be replaced. It is usually the single biggest variable on a submersible job.
Should I replace the pressure tank at the same time?
Not automatically, but it should always be tested. A tank that has lost its air charge makes the pump short cycle, which is one of the most common reasons pumps die early. If it is waterlogged or the bladder has failed, replacing it with the pump protects the new one.
Can I install a bigger pump than I had before?
Only if the well can supply it. A pump sized beyond the well’s yield draws the water level down faster and can run the well dry. The right size depends on yield, water level, lift and household demand.
How long does a well pump replacement take?
A jet pump replacement is often a few hours. A submersible on a typical Upstate well is usually completed the same day, with deeper or more complicated wells taking longer. Water is off for most of the job.
Is a new pump covered by warranty?
The pump normally carries a manufacturer’s warranty, and the installation should carry a separate labour warranty from the installer. Get both in writing, along with the model number and install date.
